The standard way of opening unknown files forces you to go through a list of known applications and is generally a pain to treat. That is why I like a context menu option "Open with Notepad" so that I can quickly open files without you through a lot of problems to have.
This registry hack is nothing new; it has always been ... think of this as a refresher course. Also note that you can use this same method to another application that you want to replace by adjusting the path in the registry show different editor.
Manual Registry Hack
Open regedit.exe through the start menu or search box, and then scroll down to the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell
Right click on "shell" and choose to create a new key, called the "Open with Notepad. Create a new key below that one called" command ". Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane and enter the following:
notepad.exe %1
The change must get affect instantly… just right-click on any file and you will view the next menu entry.
Download Registry Hack
*Download, remove then double-click on the OpenWithNotepad.reg file to enter the information into the registry. There is also an uninstall script added.
