When downloading the Windows Mobile Device Center for my computer with Windows Vista Home Basic, I was asked whether I wanted the 32-bit or 64-bit version installed. How do I know which one is the correct download for my computer?

The bit numbers refer to different technologies used in the computer's processor and motherboard. In theory 64-bit systems are better, but few home tasks really take advantage of this technology and, as there are fewer drivers available for the 64-bit versions of Windows, most computers are supplied with the 32-bit version. This is even true if they have a 64-bit processor, because these chips can run either version of Windows.
To check which version of Windows is installed, left-click on the Start button and then right-click on Computer. Left-click on Properties in the menu that appears and another window should come up with information about the computer. There will be a line titled System type about halfway down that should say either '32-bit' or '64-bit Operating System'.
