IF you've been using Vista for quite some time, you will probably be aware of the Windows update list that pops up frequently. Some of these updates might be quite useful to protect your system, there are also certain updates which are not required. This could get annoying especially if you system is processing heavy jobs. To disable these updates, follow the steps below:

Open Windows Update by clicking on the icon that prompts you for an update.

Click the 'View available updates' link.

Now, right-click on an appropriate update and select the 'Hide Update' option.
