Default Problem with the time dispalyed during startup

Hi, I have Windows Vista Home Basic running on a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The problem arising is whenever I start my computer the time shows 12:00 AM and the date is Monday, January 01 2007. Even when I reset the date and time settings and restart the computer the time and date shown is 12:00 AM Monday, January 01 2007. What should I do? Please Help.

Hello. The reason for the date resetting to Jan 2007 is a weak or a dead CMOS battery on the motherboard. Switch off the computer and open the case carefully. Have a good look at the motherboard inside the computer cabinet. You will find a round battery roughly the shape and size of a 50p coin. Carefully remove the battery using a small screwdriver. Note the model number of the battery and replace it with a new one. The cost of the battery should be around 1 $. Make sure you buy the exact same type of battery as the thickness will vary if you try to use a different one. Finally, clean the motherboard carefully using a soft bristle brush and blow away the excess dust from the cabinet with a blower or reverse end of a small vacuum cleaner. Now check if the problem still persists. If it does, then the motherboard is faulty and there is no power reaching the CMOS chip. In this case you will need to repair the motherboard, but there can be a risk of it getting damaged if not repaired by a good professional. I would recommend that you either replace the motherboard or live with the issue by entering the date and time every time you start the computer.
