Default Multiple copies of iexplore.exe running

I am using Dell Inspiring laptop with 160 GB hard drive and 3 GB RAM organization Vista and iexplorer 8. I observed that CPU is regularly at 100%. It takes while for computer to recover useful piece of that 100% so that I can persist working. Can I terminate multiple IE copy processes? Got any idea how or why these copies are running? Any suggestions are welcomed and very appreciated.

It might be excellent idea to execute virus scan. It could be probable that malicious process is running, which has been named IEXPLORE.EXE to make it harder to notice. You can also use a program like Resource Explorer to confirm if application is really located in C:\program files\Internet Explorer and not on different location.
