Windows starts up quickly on a new PC, but a few months down the line the time between pushing the power button and reaching the Windows Desktop can become annoyingly long. This is perfectly natural, and is usually caused by programs running themselves when Windows starts.

It's also easy to fix. In Windows Xp, click Start, then Run, then type 'msconfig' without the quotes (in Vista click Start then type 'msconfig' into the search box before pressing enter). Click the Startup tab, and look at the list of programs. If you spot any that you don't want to run when Windows starts, uncheck the box next to them before pressing OK.
