I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook with Win ows Vista. When I close
the lid, Windows goes into a standby mode. This is fine when I want to conserve battery life but there are times when I want to leave the computer on at home to finish large downloads.

The good news is that not only is this simple to change; but it is possible to tell Windows to,do one thing when the notebook is running on batteries, and another when it is connected to a power supply ..

Left-click on the Start button and then on Control Panel. Click on the Mobile PC title. Click on 'Change what closing the lid does' in the Power Options section. The
lid settings are the bottom of the three on display. It is a good idea to leave the On Battery option as Sleep to help conserve battery power when on the move, and to make sure the notebook is not still running when it is put in a bag. You could select Hibernate to save even more power, although this will take longer than sleep to get in and out of. Click on the down arrow in the menu in the Plugged in column and select Do nothing. Click on Save changes.
