In order to ensure that Windows offers 'NTFS' (New Technology File System) as a formatting option, first open the flash drive in 'Optimize for performance' mode. Right click on the drive in the Windows Explorer and select the 'Properties' context command. Change the tab to 'Hardware'. Select the desired USB stick once again and then click on 'Properties'. Switch to the 'Policies' tab in the following dialog box. Now activate the 'Optimize for performance' option and then click on 'OK'. This change can be implemented only after restarting the computer.
CAUTION: Once you have made this setting, make sure that the USB stick is always deactivated before unplugging it; otherwise your data might get corrupted. Alternatively, you can use the free tool 'HP USB Disk Storage' available on the CHIP DVD. Install and run the program. Select the USB stick in the 'Device'
field and set the 'File system' to 'NTFS'. Click the 'Enable compression' option
If necessary and then click on 'Start". Confirm the security query for deleting
all data on the USB stick with 'Yes'. You can also set the option 'Optimize for quick removal' as a mode for the USB stick while using the HP USB Disk Storage tool. NOTE: The NTFS file system has quite a few advantages against its predecessor FAT (File Allocation Table).
For instance, it saves small files faster, the storage capacity of the stick can be increased through drive compression, and you can work with user rights and encrypt files. However, be careful with these options-your data may not be readable on another computer if you place too many restrictions on the file system.
