How Can I Make My Old Applications Work on a Newer Operating System?

Microsoft recognized the need for backward compatibility when it introduced Windows XP. A neat new feature called the Program Compatibility Wizard was added. Using this wizard, you can easily make any program written for earlier versions of Windows run on XP. You can also manually configure application compatibility settings using the compatibility mode tab found in the properties of a program's executable or launch file.

1. Click Start.

2. Point to All Programs or Programs if you are using the classic Start Menu.

3. Point to Accessories.

4. Click Program Compatibility Wizard.

5. Click Next on the introduction screen.

6. Pick your poison on the selection method. Selecting from a list is the easiest. Click Next.

7. Windows will scan your computer for installed programs. Select the program you want to use and click Next.

8. Select the operating system you think will best suit the program and click Next.

9.Select the display settings. These usually apply to old games and educational programs, so no settings change is usually necessary. Click Next.

1O. The program will now open and you will be allowed to test the settings. Go ahead and use the program and then close it.

11. If the settings work fine, let the wizard know by selecting Yes and clicking Next. If not. try other settings by No, or try different compatibility settings.

12. After successfully selecting settings you will be prompted to share this information with Microsoft. This is completely up to you. Click Next.
