The computer identification consists of the computer's name, an optional description, and the name of either the workgroup or the domain to which the computer belongs. The computer name must follow the rules; it may be from 1 to 15 characters, contains letters, numbers, or hyphens but no space. If the computer will join a domain, you need to have access the administrator account on the domain unless the administrator has already created a computer account on the domain. When you install windows on the client system, the setup program asks for the computer name and workstation or domain information. you can change this information.

To change the computer identifi~ation in Windows XP, undertake the following steps:

1. Open the Control Panel window and right-click over the System icon. In pop-up menu select Properties option. The System properties dialog box appears.

2. Select the Computer Name tab and click over the Change button.

3. The Computer Name Change dialog appears with default computer name. Type the new name for computer. For example type, Dreamtech Prss.

4. Next, specify whether computer is member of the workgroup or domain.

5. Click on OK button.

6. A dialog box will appear that ask to restart the computer, click on the OK button to restart the computer.
