Sometimes, Windows XP, when preinstalled, is configured in such a way that it does not display blue screens in case of grave system errors, but instead just restarts automatically. The problem with this is that one has no chance to discover what the cause of the error is. For example, the entries in the dreaded blue-screen stop messages can be extremely helpful for troubleshooting one can look for them in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Take the controls into your own hands and decide for yourself whether the OS should automatically restart or display a blue screen.

To do this, open 'Control Panel', which can be accessed via 'Start I Settings'. Open 'System' and click the 'Settings' tab in the 'Startup and Recovery' section of the 'Advanced' tab. Deactivate the 'Automatically restart' option in the dialog box that appears. Now, an error message should show information about the possible causes of errors.
