The Windows registry is a large collection of settings for every imaginable feature in the operating system. Compared to the hundreds of thousands of keys that the registry occupies, registry cleaning software manages to clear only a few unused keys. And it doesn't significantly affect system performance. In fact, you shouldn't mess with the system registry at all, unless you're trying to remove leftover keys of software that doesn't uninstall properly.
