XP upgrade to windows 7

I'm currently using XP and would like to advance to windows 7. I used the windows 7 installer and it assumed I could upgrade to windows 7 but I would have to perform a complete install. What are they discussion about? Will I be able to I still use the windows 7 upgrade or do I require something else.

You can only upgrade if you are using windows vista a complete install means that you will have to restore all your information and application since it will get erased as windows 7 gets installed.

You can’t just slot in the W7 DVD in the tray and upgrade with a XP computer. What they are requesting you to do is, if you have an ISO file of windows 7 to DVD and after that you will have to clean XP and do a fresh Installation of Windows 7. And if you don’t have the ISO image of Windows 7 you can get it from Microsoft Website and also get the registration key and at last validate the W7 RC installation.
