I want to split an audio book into chapters, as my media player does not remember the position of the track when switched off.
I want to split an audio book into chapters, as my media player does not remember the position of the track when switched off.
The easiest way is to use the free Audacity software. Download computeractive software. The only other form of preparation is to install a small file that allows Audacity to save files in MP3 format.
Start Audacity and open the long file. Make sure the Selection Tool is in use by left-clicking on the top-left icon, which looks like an 'I'. If the gaps between the chapters are clear on the main screen, left-click once so that a vertical line appears. Click on the Edit menu, then Select and Start to cursor. You will see the first chapter is highlighted.
Click on the Edit menu again and then Split. The First chapter is then given its own line. Repeat for all the chapters in the audio book, playing the audio if it is hard to find the gaps. Make sure you stop rather than pause the audio before trying to split the tracks. Now there will be a track for each chapter. Left-click an empty area in the left-hand title box for the top track and the complete track will be highlighted to show it is selected. Click on the File menu and then Export Selection as MP3. Select a location and a name for the file and click Save. It is a good idea to fill in as much information as possible in the 103 tags. Don't forget the track number so they play in the correct order. Click on the OK button and the file will be converted. Repeat for the rest of the sections of the audio book.
