SYMPTOMS

If you installing not an upgrading Windows XP and mounting Windows XP on disk that have Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 then Boot.ini file also have a Windows NT version 4.0 entry.

CAUSE

This activity can happen because Boot.ini file is loaded into memory during text-mode setup to stay the file intact. After the System partition is formatted, the Boot.ini file is restored on System partition to retain boot paths to any boot partitions other than the System partition.

RESOLUTION

To work around this activity, change the Boot.ini file to take out the Windows NT version 4.0 entry. In future installations, you can avoid this activity by deleting and then recreating system partition before formatting.Though, if you delete and recreate system partition, current operating system can not boot.
