Error message when you try to start a Windows XP-based virtual machine in Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1: "OS not found"

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start a Windows XP-based virtual machine in Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1, you get an error message like following message:
OS not found. Install an OS on this hard drive.

CAUSE

This problem happens if you have not installed an operating system on the virtual hard disk.

RESOLUTION

To solve this problem, follow the steps given below:

1. Insert the Windows XP installation CD into the CD or DVD drive.
2. In the Virtual PC List window, click the virtual machine on which you want to install the operating system, and then click Start Up.
3. When you get the error message click Restart on the Control menu, and then click Restart.
4. When you get the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key on the keyboard.
5. Follow the instructions to install the operating system on the virtual hard disk.
