Start in Standard Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) Mode

Start your PC via VGA mode, especially if the display is distorted or if unreadable text shows on the screen. By default, the Windows NT boot loader menu proposes options that allow you to start the PC normally or in VGA mode. To apply the standard VGA driver, select the VGA Mode option.

Obtain the Latest Service Pack

Service packs have Windows NT updates. Service packs stay the product current and expand and update your computer's functionality. Service packs consist of updates, system administration tools, drivers, and extra components. All of these files are conveniently packaged for easy downloading. Service packs are collective; each latest service pack contains all the fixes that are contained in service packs released previous as well as any new fixes.

Check Permissions

Make confident that the correct permissions are set for your account. To find out whether you have the proper permissions to run and use the Office program you are having issue with, log on to the PC as an administrator. You have full read/write permission to all folders and files on the computer, when you log on to Windows NT as an administrator. If the issue does not happen once you log on as an administrator, verify the permissions of your logon account.

Close Unnecessary Memory-Resident Programs

Programs that run in the background in memory are called terminate-and-stay-resident programs (TSRs). E.g. these programs may be virus protection software, efficacy programs, print manager programs, or screen savers. To find out if a terminate-and-stay-resident program is running, follow these steps:

1. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL >> clicking Task List then display the close program window.
2. Close any unidentified or unnecessary programs in the Close Program list by clicking the program to select it and clicking End Task.
3. If you close a program and then want to close another one, press CTRL+ALT+DEL >>click Task List to display the Close Program window again. Repeat steps 1 during 3 until you close all unidentified or unnecessary programs.
A few TSRs may be loaded into memory but may not show on the Task List. These TSRs are loaded using the Windows NT registry.


To see what programs are loaded by the registry, follow these steps:

1. On the Start menu>>click Run. In the Open box, type regedit, >> click OK. choose the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
2. Select the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
3. Select the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
4. Select the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce
Check the TEMP and TMP Environment Variables
An invalid TEMP or TMP environment variable can cause errors with Office programs. Make confident your temporary folders are correctly set up., follow these steps, to perform so.

1. Click the Start menu, point to Settings>> click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon. once the System Properties dialog box appears>> click the Environment tab.

This tab records the existing System and User Variables. Appear in User Variables for the TEMP and TMP environment variable settings. Make sure that the folders mentioned by these variables exist and contain valid folder names. Also make sure that the hard disk on which the folders are placed has at least 20 megabytes (MB) of free hard disk space and that you have read/write authorization to those folders
Temporarily Disable the Network

Temporarily stop the drivers that allow you to use the network, if you do not need network access to run or install the Office programs. This troubleshooting step stops the system from loading the drivers that are necessary to use the network when you reboot the PC. Disabling the network drivers and may decrease or eliminate system conflicts. To perform this, follow these steps:

1. Click Settings on the Start menu>> click Control Panel. In the Control Panel>>double-click the System icon.
2. In the System Properties dialog box>>click the Hardware Profiles tab.
3. Click Properties>> click the Network tab>>Click to select the Network-Disabled Hardware Profile check box>> click OK twice.
4. Restart the PC. To do this, click Shutdown on the Start menu. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box>>click Restart The Computer >>click Yes.
