Default Turn Off the Annoying Windows XP System Beeps

When a lot of time is spent in front a computer, the irritating beeps makes you crazy after a period of time. No one want to be informed that you have pressed a wrong key anymore, so here’s a way to turn off all the system beeps in Windows XP.

The most frustrating beep happens when Volume control is used… but there are other beeps as well, like on error dialog box or when a wrong key is pressed.

    Disable Beep in Device Manager:

Go to Device Manager by right-clicking Computer and selecting Properties option from the menu, after that on the Hardware tab the Device Manager option will be there.

Choose View or Show hidden devices option from the menu.

Search Non-Plug and Play Drivers on the list and after that right-click “Beep” option and deactivate it:

    Default More Information

If asked to restart hit no, and after that right-click one more time and select Properties option from the menu. On the Driver tab, modify the Startup enter to “Disabled” and after that click the “Stop” option if available.

Now the system beep speaker should be disabled, but it may not change the volume control beep, go further ahead.

    Disabling Beep in Registry:

Go to start menu and then to run dialog box, and enter the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound

Search the “Beep” key on the right side and reset it to “no”.

    Disable Beep in Sounds Panel:

Start Control Panel and search the Sounds and Audio Devices panel, selec the Sounds tab and after that search “Default Beep” on the list.

Reset the sound drop-down at the end to “None” and after that click on Apply option. And the volume control beep should be deactivated.

If want to modify Critical Stop to “None” too, and should also turn off other items. One can also use TweakUI to disable the beeps, but if you follow the items on this page you shouldn’t be required to do that.
