Windows XP updates files with the last access update time when they are opened by any application. It’s useful at all, here’s a way to deactivate it.
For Windows Vista it’s not necessary because it’s set as the default automatically, Even when you upgrade from XP to Vista.
Manual Registry Tweak:
Go to run dialog box from the start menu, and move down to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\FileSystem
Reset a DWORD value in the right side called NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate and gives it a value of 1. To get rid of this tweak remove the key or reset value to 0.
To make it effective reboot the system.
Download Registry Tweak:
Download and extract the file and double-click on DisableLastAccessUpdate.reg file to type the information into the registry. There’s a removal script included as well.
