If you are having access to any more user account with administrator rights, you can use that account to modify the password of the account which is locked out. You can also use the default Administrator account that is built into Windows XP.
First you should boot the system into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer system.
When you see the blue Dell globe or screen, press the F8key around 3 times a second.
You must get the Windows startup menu. Use the Up or Down arrow keys for highlighting the “Safe Mode”
Press [Enter] on Safe Mode, then press the [Enter] on [Windows XP] key. The system is supposed to boot in Safe Mode.
Once you are at the Account Log on Screen, * click at on the icon for the user account with admin rights, or click on the icon for the administrators account.
* Note: For Home the Admin account isn’t generally shown & in Safe Mode wherein you have to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys twice to show. Type in “Administrator” for the username and password which will be blank if one has not been configured, or type in the username of a known adminastrive account.
When the system has booted to the desktop, use the subsequent steps to change the accounts password:
- Click at the Start, Control Panel and Administrative Tools.
- Atlast click at Computer Management.
- Double click on the Local Users and Groups, double click the folder Users too.
- Right click on the account name which is locked out, and click on the Set Password.
You might get a warning message about changing the password, just click Proceed. Keep the New Password box blank, also leave the Confirm Password box blank. Click on OK, and at last OK again.
Then shut down all the Windows, reboot the system and try to log in. There are also applications that can recover the password for you. The following companies provide these applications at a cost.
- iOpus is used for Password Recovery in Windows XP
- You can also use LostPassword.com
- Asterisk Password Recovery XP v1.89 can also be used.
- Windows XP / 2000 / NT Key
If the above data does not help in recovering the password, the only alternative left is to format the hard drive then reinstall Windows as well as the system software.
