If you are using Windows XP in a separate or workgroup environment, you can make password reset disk to recover local password thus you are able to log onto PC if you forget password.
To create the password reset disk, do the following:
1. Go to Start, Control Panel and then click User Accounts.
2. Tick account name.
3. Below Related Tasks, tick Prevent a forgotten password.
4. Follow instructions in Forgotten Password Wizard to make a password reset disk.
5. Confirm that put disk in a safe place.
To use the password reset disk, do the following:
1. When Windows logon screen appears, tick your username.
2. Type your password box shows. Hit enter. You will get error message shown below:
Did you forget your password?
You can tick the "?" button to see password suggestion.
Or you can make use of password reset disk.
Please type your password again.
Be definite to utilize right uppercase and lowercase letters.
3. Click use your password reset disk. The Password Reset Wizard opens.
4. Press Next.
5. Put password reset disk, and click next.
6. Enter new password in Type a new password box and in confirm box.
7. In Type a new password hint box, type a hint to remind you password if you forget the new password if you want to use one. Remember that anybody can guess at your hint.
8. Press Next, and then Finish.
9. Enter new password in password box.
Password reset disk is updated automatically with new password information so you do not want to make a new password reset disk.
