Removing an earlier OS after installing new version of Windows is quite ordinary process in computing. Sadly, this process can only be done by performing total "Clean" installation of Windows XP; means all traces of previous OS will be deleted. As this takes some time, you can rest guaranteed that all Windows 98 files will be gone at result of this operation.

Instructions

Step 1

Make backup of main files and folders on USB drive, CD-R, DVD-R, or any other removable media.

Step 2

Put in Windows XP disk and reboot system.

Step 3

Boot from CD by pushing any key as PC loads.

Step 4

Press "Enter" then "F8" to begin installation process and agree to licensing agreement.

Step 5

Choose partition upon which to do clean installation of Windows XP from list of partitions that shows onscreen. There will generally be only one partition, but select biggest partition if you are presented with over one option.

Step 6

Select option to format partition by NTFS file system. These will auto-write over all Windows 98 files, leaving only new installation of Windows XP on PC.
