Try another sound device
If possible, connect a different output device into the system. For example, if you have been using speakers, try a new pair of speakers or a set of headphones to ensure that the problem is not linked to the device itself.
Check whether you can hear sound. If you can hear sound, there is a problem with the original output device and the problem is fixed. If you can’t hear sound, connect the original output device back into the computer.
Use the Windows XP Sound Troubleshooter
Windows XP contains a troubleshooting program which could help you solve your sound problems. Start the Windows XP Sound Troubleshooter automatically or manually and then answer every question on-screen in order to try to find a resolution.
Step 1: Start the Sound Troubleshooter
Start Sound Troubleshooter manually by using the following steps:
a. Click Start, and after that click Help and Support.
b. In the navigation pane on the left, click Games, sound, and video problems.
c. In the topic pane, on the right side, click Sound Troubleshooter.
Step 2: Use the Sound Troubleshooter
a. Click the option that explains the problem that is occurring, and after that click Next.
b. Repeat step 1 until your issue is fixed or until you have get to the end of the troubleshooting path.
