The most important reason for the error is basic there. The ubuntu installer installed Grub into the mbr. The recovery console somebody told you about is not going with the XP installation but to repair the mbr for an presented copy of Windows already on the drive when knocked out by the distort when installing Grub.
It is a lot easier to see ubuntu added into the Vista BCD store with the use of a free tool called EasyBCD that uses an alternate for Grub called NeoGrub. And you wouldn't even need an entry in the mbr for Linux but just point the Vista boot loader at the root primay for ubuntu with that already set as the mount point "/" when installing the distort using a custom partitioning choice.
Firstly in order to see XP installed the drive will need to be wiped in order to take away the Grub entry in the mbr. You can boot from the ubuntu cd and select the ubuntu installer in order to use the edition of GParted included there to wipe the current ubuntu root and swap if seen off and then carry on to make a brand new primary for XP to go as the first partition leaving room for ubuntu as 2nd and 3rd for a swap while that would be an extended not primary there.
by XP installed followed by ubuntu prevent looking Grub installed into the mbr a next time many use the Wubi boot loader in order to dual boot a distro beside with Windows. Through the ubuntu installation you would use the custom option and not allow the ubuntu to use the whole drive plus edit where the mount point will be pointing it to the root/system primary for ubuntu
