    Default Problem with windows xp

My Daughter in law has installed XP Pro on computer. It Boots okay but other than Internet Explorer, Windows Mail nothing else will perform. Virus App is not running along with other startup programs. Nothing in the Quick Launch will work. Run Command is available but when I try to run msconfig I get the message, Windows cannot open file: MSConfig.exe. Go to System Restore, Options show but none of the links are active.
    Give me some advice.

You have the Xp installation disk used on your daughter in law system? If you have that the first thing you can try with the disk in the optical drive is run the system file checker. You type "scan now" in on the Run command line and press the enter key or click the ok button to start the system file confirmation tool.

If there new added on recently like a new program it may have seen a bad install where some of the main system files were affected. a different way to get at the msconfig utility is to press the F8 key when Windows is first starting to load and select the safe mode. That will see only the basics for Windows load. One time you reach the desktop you can try typing msconfig in at the Run prompt while in safe mode to see if you can open there.

As you are booted in safe mode you can also try starting up the system restore feature once more to see if it will work there. Due to the huge amount of problems being seen but you may have to perform a repair install of Windows in order to save the current installation on the machine.
