Quite a few things can cause XP not to boot properly. XP has a wealth of tools and start modes that can be used to troubleshoot the system. If XP boots, but still has a problem, try to solve the problem without booting into one of these special modes. For example, if one piece of hardware is not working properly and the system boots properly, use Device Manager and the troubleshooting wizards to troubleshoot the problem. Another problem can be caused by an application that loads during startup. Four major tools can be used to troubleshoot Windows XP boot problems: Last Known Good Configuration, Safe Mode, Recovery Console, and Automated System Recovery wizard.
