Tips for Securing your Wireless Network

There are a numbers of things that you can keep in your mind and which will help you to lessen you with your security in your wireless network. Following are the list compiled as well as the list of tips and I think will be useful to anyone who has a wireless network.

• As the case might be with a wired network, preferred only to share what is needed. Don’t share the entire partition with others, share your folders instead. It will also depend on the level of confidentiality; you must also keep a password for protection and for the shared file using an archive tool.

• If you’ve installed the WEP authentication method, that make sure that you use the Shared Key method, and even you can change your WEP keys and can be made them as difficult as possible for other users who try to operate it.

• Make sure that to secure the wireless access point with a strong password; then don’t just leave the default one in any place!

• Disable the access point of administration by making the use of wireless clients. It means that any changes done to the access point configuration and it would be done for the machine which is been attached to the wired network available.

• If someone using smaller networks, then try to make use of MAC address filtering as well as an added means of security. After adding then don’t rely on this application alone but use it in conjunction with another security method also which will help you in protection of the smaller network.

• By changing the default option of SSID to something which is understandable by you but it is not understandable to the outside users. By making this it will make more difficult for the outside users to connect to your network. Make sure that to change the setting to that something that which you won’t give too much of information about your network.

• When disabling the SSID broadcasting. This feature is meant to make the disabling process easier for the clients and making them to connect to the wireless network because the network name can be automatically discovered by the way of client’s operating system. It means that anyone in range of your access point will automatically know that your network is existing currently.

• If you need a wireless access in building your alone wireless network, then try by putting the access point in the centre of the building so that it will then decrease the chance of a wardriver* which is being in range of your signal.

• If you are willing to see the dip of the speed then by using a VPN which would help you to make more secure option for a wireless network. This option is fairly quick enough and is easy to install and has great benefits of using it, as it is opposed by other means of security also.

• Note: A person who roams with his laptop from one place to another in gathering of information about the wireless system is called as a wardriver.
