The introduction of 802.11b was resulted in the best steps towards the expansion of wireless networking the jump to speeds is up to 11mbps but in reality you try to achieve the speed something about 6mbps which is contributed considerably to this. This has resulted in growth and also the 802.11a and g have also been released and they are going stronger and stronger. Due to the above things its proven that track record and is relatively economical hardware, 802.11b has resulted in emerging as a favorite amongst the user’s of SOHO. The 802.11g has also been improved on the basis of its performance as well as its backward compatible.
Wi-Fi means Wireless Fidelity, or 802.11b which is an IEEE regular is used for wireless Local Area Networks. There is also a backward responsive with 802.11, 802.11b which will run on the 2.4 GHz band and is also accomplished for working at the speed of up to 11Mbps. Due to this speed it will allow you to surf the Internet at broadband speed whenever it is connected to the access point or in the ad hoc mode. The IEEE has also published its 802.11 in the year 1997 and it made it’s the first globally approved wireless LAN to make it customary. In the year 1999 the IEEE amended the specifications that to add two more speeds of 5.5 and 11Mbps.
From the seven layers of the ISO Model 802.11, the other 802.x principles, centers are about the manual and the information connection layer. Any function which is working on the operating system or the type of protocol which should work as well on a Wi-Fi LAN as it did on the Ethernet LAN.
The 802.11b is a kind of adapter for the purpose of wireless network and can also operate on two different modes i.e. Ad-Hoc mode or the communications mode. In the communication mode all the traffic of the user’s pass through a wireless access point and can be thought of as a wired network without cables. They are been commonly setup in order to allow the possessions such as printers and files to be shared. Following is the demonstration shown for setting up the setup for Infrastructure mode.
But in the Ad-Hoc mode, the user’s computer or the mobile devices must talk to each other directly and must see to it that it do not need an access point. This kind of formation can also support up the 8 devices which are being connected to each other and this is also useful whenever you want to make a setup of a wireless connection quickly or whenever you have a few computers in your network range. Following is the demonstration shown for setting up the setup for Ad- Hoc mode.
Advantages
• Interoperability
• Advanced data rates (up to 11Mbps)
• Longer range (approx. 100 meters)
• Relatively economical hardware
Disadvantages
• Precautions
• RF Band is shared
Most of the new laptops are being enabled with Wi-Fi and also have the technology which is built in. If the laptop do not have this technology or you are owing an old laptop then you have to purchase a new wireless NIC card which will easily fit into the empty PCMCIA slot or in the USB port this is also applicable for the Personal Digital Assistants.
