Default Unable to connect via Ethernet!!!

Ok, so I go to my friend’s house there is a lot and every time I am not capable to connect to his netgear wireless router with my Dell XPS Vista laptop. The password is also like a 20 characters long and my friend doesn’t know it, he now connects through the Ethernet cord.
So I figured it out that might just connect through the Ethernet cord.
I think that I was wrong. When I plug it in it doesn't show me anywhere about it with the flashing yellow dots in the Ethernet slot.
By the time he doesn't desire me to reset the router so doesn’t say to do that. And he doesn't want me to make a mess with the password.
So can any one tell me what is wrong? And I also make use of his Ethernet cord which can’t be broken.

    Need some more information.
Make and model of the router?
    What make/model of Ethernet card?
Does Device Manager show that your Ethernet card is working properly or not?
Have you made use of the computer with an Ethernet connection any where else and did it work there properly?

Are you able to run and post the results of an ipconfig /all for your computer hooked to your friend's router? Also, run and post ipconfig /all for your friend's computer which is been hooked to the router and post those results only.
The simplest way for doing this would be you run the ipconfig /all for your computer, copy the results to a notebook file and save the file to a thumb drive. Connect it to your friend back up to the router and come here and open your thread. Run the ipconfig /all and also copy the results as a post. Then open the file on the thumb drive and copy the results from your computer in the same post.

What is the version and the patch level of Windows on your machine? That with the make, model, and hardware review of the router which may give me a start.

Have you made an attempt for repairing the connection from device manager?
