Thread: Restrictive Wireless Bandwidth for Internet

I’m encountering with a problem and I require some help on it. I have a 512 Kbps ADSL unrestricted connection which is used by two pc connected by Ethernet cables and a laptop which is been connected wirelessly. Now the problem is that my cousin who make uses of my laptop and also uses up the bandwidth. He mainly surfs on youtube and downloads stuff from the torrent sites. All the computers also use the internet with the help of router, a speed stream one. It doesn’t have any bandwidth features. Now I have asked him a couple of times to stop the downloading but he pays no attention to it. Now I don’t require disconnecting him, just have to limit the speed which he receives.

Any software or any other suggestions?

Well, you'll require a router which will offers you functionality to limit the bandwidth via port or MAC address. Have you tried any software to install on the computer where he can be easily defeated. I think that you must also consider about the value of disconnecting him for a little while. Possibly it'll get your message crossways.

I think you bridge the ADSL router which you are having and then install it with a well-matched DD-WRT the 3rd party firmware in it. It has pretty polite bandwidth management ability and must do the trick. Though, I have to agree it, I'd just cut him off completely until it sinks in.

I had that problem too login into your router settings and from there you can simply disconnect his device from the router pending the router most all routers have the option to do that and also if you do that change the default login and password to the router to what you know only to cut him off completely you can allow that device to connect in the future.

Ok, so any good routers that isn’t too hard on my wallet? And something that I might be able to find because I’m in abroad and thus it’s a bit hard to find something unknown.

Linksys WRT54G, and check the DD-WRT pages to see if the specific hardware revision of the one you're considering is compatible.

If that's not available, look over the list of compatible routers and see if there's one you can get.
