Thread: Network is a Wired as well as Wireless too

I am completely new to the networking and have been reading this forum for a week but unable to work with my problem out. I’ve recognize that this is most frequently basic questions but the total learning curve is testing me out. I have just recently purchased a new PC and the Old PC which is still good and also works fine so that I would like to the network even if for short time for moving large files over.

Both PC's are running XP Home in SP3. I also have a Speed stream 4200 Modem with a Belkin Wireless N Router which is connected to it and even to new PC with the Ethernet Cable. I have also added a new Netgear Wireless G USB Adaptor to my Old PC. Wherein both are been connected to the net and are also working fine. Also have purchased a crossover cable and I also made an attempt for connecting the old PC to Belkin Router and it was successful - still able to receive the net on my old PC so that the whole thing seems to be ok there.

I have a Trend Micro which is a trail version on my new PC - at least for a short time and AVG Internet Security on my old PC. On the Trend Network page I’m only able to see my new PC. I can also log into Belkin Router as well as can see both the PC's. Which are connected at times are PS3 and an iPod to it. While I had the crossover being connected and can see only the 2 entries on the Belkin for old PC. Moreover, no matter in all above the original has indented to network with 2 via wireless and or crossover which I cannot locate it either from the other PC. When I go to My Network Places and select View Workgroup Computers it says that I do not have any access. Apparently I have done something wrong in it. I also think that it may have something to do with the Access Point but not sure about it.

How do I get setup?

There is no need for a crossover cable; you will have all the connections which are been required by you in both the machines which are having a connection to the router.

I have read while reading some of the tutorials and other also more. I’m able to see a network in New PC and Old PC says that unable to access to the network. I consider that I did all as per the directions but still no success in it. Am I right in supercilious that the LAN setup is done on the 1394 Connection?

1394 is "Firewire" and is been used for camcorders and they are alike. No one knows that why it always maintains to be "Connected" even though few of us have even seen a cable for it. If you enabled the file and printer sharing for the Windows firewall then get it configured. But you also have to configure the non-Windows firewalls for the required access. If the AVG Internet Security is similar to the AVG security suite for small business all I can say is that "Good Luck." I also did see anyone once getting it configured for allowing the printer for sharing it.

I’m having numerous of IEEE-1394 cables on my computer. He is also right, that the Firewire interface which has not anything to do with normal networking and will always claim that it's been connected.

Ok It is an option that AVG might be challenging. Though, if the 1394 is fire wire and the Athos (Local Area Connection) is the best connection for disabling the loose net then I am also not confirming that what the WAN connection is showing up for. Choose the settings in it properties. First off, you can post the graphics straight to the forum, which will make it easier for review. For posting a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and then press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and there Paste the screen shot which you have cut out. You can use the PAINT to neat to go with, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here. You don't make use of the ICS for this task, since you are having a router.

I have found some help on the AVG and now been able to share the folders which are emerging in My Network Places and the PC is also showing it in the View Networked Computers for the Old PC. But still not anything screening in my new PC.

When I select the router in My Network Places and then right click and select the Properties I receive a message to affect that device is not available.

I don't care about viewing this as long as I understand it completely that what it is and what it is doing. As, I have talk about the AVG on Old PC and have configured as well as also set the Windows Firewall to NO. And now have the shared folders appearing in My Network Places and the PC is also showing that in View Networked Computers for the Old PC. I am also considering that if I’m able to get the network on my new PC with the link.

I have been intent on a firewall since I am also assume that you make use of the tutorial to setup of file and printer sharing the similar workgroup name and so on. After I revealed that I possibly will be able to see my router I then ran into some of the odd and random complexity and soon reverted to "Hide icons for ..." so don't know whether the error message you get is the reason by the firewall or by the router for not behaving.

If any of the 4 ping tests in the following fail to return respond then the most likely cause is a firewall on the end machine.

To open a Command Window: Start - Run – cmd (command in 98SE) – OK

To verifying a computer's IP address: open a Command Window and type ipconfig in it.

Now for some troubleshooting:

1. On each of the PC open a Command window and type ping IP of Other (where IP of Other is the IP address of the other PC)

Do you get Replies, or do you get packets lost?

If you got Replies,

2. Do the same ping apart from use the Computer Name of the other computer: ping Name of Other PC

Replies or lost packets?

If you got Replies to either or both,

3. Then
Start - Run - \\IPofOther - OK

With luck after about a minute you should get an explorer window showing the other PC's shares. If not, what is the error message?

I swiftly ran the pings from each of the PC and both of them were timed out - all lost on each. It's worked on it for the whole night.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window which opens, type the below shown commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Then right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter for copying the stuff to the clipboard. Also paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine where there is no network connection, then make use of a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk for transferring a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
