Thread: Retaining of wireless connection

The setup which I’m having is a wired DSL modem/router addicted to a computer running Vista Home Premium SP1, and then my computer XP media center edition SP2, that is also having a USB DLink Wireless N adapter on it. Both the computers are kept in one room I’m not having any problem with that, but now they have been enthused to opposite sides of the house where there I have a major connectivity problem. The connection also drops down erratically, takes more time for getting connection to it again, often times it won't get connected for hours at a time, has the capability of holding the connection for at most 2 hours, and I'm also getting annoying with this. I've observed that every time the connection is going to drop, or is having problem with reconnecting it. When I can pick up the neighbors brand new DSL connections wireless signal and the signals never falls.

There are no connection problems with the wired connection on the Vista machine, so it isn't that. I do now not want to run the Vista network wizard since I errand to keep the network type as Public, not private. So, other than receiving a repeater, what can I do? Are there any settings where I can alter in the modem/router to make the wireless part work better? I should also state that I make use of the Dlink connection management program that came with the adapter. I don't think that I’m not able to install the driver without it also installing that program, so I’m also not capable of using Windows wireless connection manager in it.

I was just eager that I’m not willing to but something fox fixing the router and I was also missing with some of the key setting on my system that had it all blocked up.
What puzzles me is that my adapter picks up actually strong signal from the wireless access points which are placed 10 times more far away than my DSL modem/router is placed.
The adapter is N but it evade back to whatever "flavor" your router is, so in my case it is G.

Probability you have posted before viewing my post about barriers. Rarely getting the router up for the higher can also result you with the help (mine is on a little shelf 5 ft. above floor level).

And also keep in mind that the stick type antennas on several routers have the weakest signal along the axis. In other words it supposed to be pointing at right angles from the path to your computer.

My computer is in the garage, the new computer is in the back bedroom. Almost precise to the diagonal opposites, with no direct path. There are doors and TV's and two refrigerators along the way. I've moved the router over the place, but yet no luck for it. Accidentally I'll receive the signal, for about 30 minutes, at the best. I also believe that it must be the huge fridge which is resulting the problem. I’m also having the adapter in the USB extension for plugging the thinger, so that I’m able to move that around, but yet restricted to where I can put it.
Oh well, speculated that I'll have to live with it.

That's not a barrier; that's a whole blockage route for a poor ' Wi-Fi signal that wishes to go in a straight line! You've also answered your question about why those signals are stronger it's easier to get out all the way through air. A repeater which also called as range extender may also work if it can go in a place where it has a rationally clear path to the router and to the adapter too. But, they seem to be difficult for getting them worked.

Are there any chances of running an Ethernet cable? If not then the whole way maybe from the router to a place that a wireless access point can converse with the adapter. Or from the computer to a place a wireless bridge for communicating wirelessly with the help of router. The down side is also difficult to locate any bargains on the devices which I have stated it before. Also at times a cable can go up to the attic or down to the basement, across to wherever, and then back down or up.

You may be trying to change the channel which you are using now. It might not improve your signal strength, but if you are able to receive 4 channels away from the strongest networks would also cut down on obstruction.

Yeah, I have figured out the obstacle which was causing the issue, still what threw me off was the strength of the signal from all the other places that are so much advance away.
