I am having a problem with one of the mainly difficult computer running win XP. The computer is also a P4. It has a Belkin wireless network card is been inserted in it. I have downloaded as well as upgraded the drivers for this card and it appears to be working accurately, in so far as it classifies the several networks around it. I have also enabled the WZC. The problem is that when I click on network for connecting it, it tries to do so but does not ask for the WEP key. If I click on any of the other networks it can also see, it does ask for the WEP key. The two alike machines at the side of it, are with the dissimilar wireless adaptors, have connected instantly forwardly and are just working fine. I have also disconnected the internal Belkin wireless card in its place and a substitute as a Belkin USB Wireless adaptor but same thing took place! Is this a Belkin thing?

I have also gone into the windows software for trying it and also entered the wap key physically, but it did not approve it - it is demanding for a hex series and I’m unable to locate the way for reverting it to a pass phrase.

I’m also able to appreciate from reading other threads that hex is more secure and the diverse cards may read the pass phrase keys differently, but my other machines is not encountering with same kind of problem.

Anyone with any suggestions? Thanks in anticipation.

You require to actually think of varying to HEX keys or better yet, just moving to WPA at least, it's a much more protected encryption. The cause that it's not requesting for the key for that network it is possibly got an inaccurate key stored in it. Take away any stored wireless profiles and then try again searching for networks again.

Thank you! I hope to upgrade my system in a while as well as will indeed go for a more secure encryption as you have advised me. I have also looked in the advanced settings, but unable to locate any stored 'keys' there. Where would you recommend me to find this key in order to clean it up?

Are you making use of WZC or a third party wireless client? For WZC, View Available Wireless Networks, on the left hand side, select the Change the order of preferred networks. Also take away the network detection for the network in question and then it'll prompt for a new key when you try to connect it again.

I have followed as you have recommended me; took away the profiles which I found, WZC is also activated and the pc is also recognizing all of the accessible Networks about it. Though, when I click on my network it goes for a search and then comes up with the caption in a small window saying:

"Windows is finding difficult to connect to the particular network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks and try to connect again"

This I have done. The pc is accurately 3m from the router, the signal is also very strong as well as I think that I have ticked all the appropriate boxes.

Have you tried disabling any firewalls on the machine? Is this machine able to connect to other networks?

Yes, I have disabled the windows firewall firstly. When I click on the other networks which are accessible I am then asked for their encryption key, as I would anticipate it to do for it! This appears to be a most unusual situation as I said in advance the machines next to it connect fine to our router: it is just this machine and our network only! If I disable the WZC and make use of the Belkin full software with the connection manager, it will demand for a key, but will not accept the passphrase declining to accept particular characters like as 's'. Many thanks for your helpful proposal and aid. I have to say that I was so annoyed with it yesterday, I took out the whole thing Belkin, detached all their software and installed a linksys adaptor and 'viola' it all worked! The pc is now gladly conversing to the network, printer etc. In fairness the Belkin stuff was rather old so whether that had something to do with it I don't know. Any way, once again thank you for your support which has been very much cherished, it forever good to know there is a place to ask a question!
