With an always-on, high-speed Internet connection such as Digital Subscriber Line, a router is an addition to the local network. It filters out unwanted access to the network, which secures an intruder from accessing PCs that are connected to that network. Though, getting PCs, routers and modems on the same page might not be as per plan. There are a certain things to be aware of, particularly if this is a wireless network.


• Detach DSL modem and D-Link router. For the network to recognize its devices properly, these devices must be connected in a particular way.

• Insert in the DSL modem's power cord. There is generally no power on a modem. Simply inserting in its electrical cable will switch it on. Provide DSL modem a couple minutes to re-build its connection to AT&T's network sooner than taking several advance action.

• Insert the D-Link router's power cord. Like the DSL modem, this router won’t have a power button; plug in the power cable, and it switch on. Allow the D-Link router sit for a few minutes while it sets its connection to the DSL modem and AT&T's network.

• Connect PC to the router with an Ethernet cable. Even if the router along with modem are wireless, a physical connection have to be sets to suitably configure the router. If this is not a wireless network, then setup process is ended.

For enabling a D-Link router on network, start an Internet browser and browse to the address. This will bring to D-Link router's interface. The original User Name is "admin", and without any password. Type the User Name and hit "Log In". The Setup screen will appear. Refer to the D-Link router's documentation for resetting password and forwarding ports. In case of a wireless network. First up, set the network's Service Set Identifier title, to identify it when other wireless networks are close by. Also, select the wireless encryption and password. Particular instructions based on the model of D-Link router; refer to the documentation.

• Remove the Ethernet cable from the PC. New wireless network will be visible with the PCs wireless adapter. Windows and OS X will inform about networks in range while adapter is enabled. Attach one with the SSID, and type the password.
