Thread: My wireless router is running slow.

My transfer speed of router is very slowly decreasing. Normally the speed is up to about 54 Mbps and at times reduced to 48 Mbps, and for short moments of 36 Mbps. However, when the router acts up my speed drops to between 1 Mbps and 15 Mbps. Typically I do not notice anything until you start using applications that require higher bandwidth, i.e. playing streaming video. Normally when this occurs I just disconnect the modem and my router for minute and clears the issue, but sometimes it does not work. If this does not work I reset the router and then updated the firmware, changed the channel, below the settings MTU, and to adjust some other settings I've forgotten over the years. This time it did upgrade the firmware because I believe that I am the more advanced version that still does not fix this problem forever.

If it occurs every time it's maybe a driver problem or wireless interference, with a failing adapter a third possibility. If it only occurs sometimes it is maybe wireless interference or a failing adapter.

Ensure you have the latest driver for your wireless; if it is an included adapter the driver should be from your computer manufacturer's web site.
