The most widely used standard for WiFi devices is 802.11g. Look for a minimum of 802.11g. This will ensure a speed of up to 54 Mbps. 802.11n is the newer standard, which hasn't taken off yet but is much faster. If you can find an 802.11n wireless LAN card for your desktop PC, then opt for it as long as it isn't costlier than an 802.11g card. The 802.11n standard supports speeds of up to 248 Mbps. For this speed though, you need a router with the same standard support¬ed. The same things should be considered before buying a laptop. Laptops generally come with 802.11g support and a select few have 802.11g.
