WiFi cards for the desktop are generally available as PCI cards, but also found as USB dongles. WiFi cards are a better option with a lower risk while switching between operating systems. If your PCI slot is filled with other cards, then the USB WiFi dongle is the other option you have.
Laptops don't have issues with wireless network. Laptops these days come with WiFi built into them. If your old laptop doesn't have WiFi connectivity, then a USB port is your best bet. PCMCIA cards are also available for WiFi. Some of the laptops might come with 802.11b which is close to 11 Mbps. USB WiFi is preferable as you can also use them on a desktop if you want as compared to a PCMCIA card is meant only for laptops.
