A router and switch serve two different purposes. The switch allows many users to communicate with each other. Hubs and wireless access points do the same thing. Wireless access points allow users to connect to other computers on a network wirelessly. Routers in the home scenario are most useful in distributing an Internet con¬nection with other computers without the need of a com¬puter or server.
A switch is useful in offices where departments or floors can have a single switch with computers connected to it. Multiple switches are connected to each other to form a large network within the building.
