Bluetooth creates small wireless networks, called personal area networks (PANs), between pes and peripheral devices such as input devices like keyboard and mouse. Bluetooth is the base for future standards of IEEE for wireless PANs. The Blueteoth specification allows for transfer of data at rates from 723 Kbps to Mbps, with a maximum range of 10 meters.

Bluetooth device interoperate in a master/slave scheme. The personal area network (PAN) created by bluetooth is sometimes called a piconet. More than seven Bluetooth slave devices (upto 255) can participate in a piconet at one time, but only seven of those devices can activate at one time. Bluetooth ™ wireless technology enables you to establish a wireless communication between one Bluetooth ™ device such as your notebook, and other Bluetooth devices such as another notebook, a mobile phone, a camera or a modem station without any cables within a 10 meters range, The range depends on the class of the Bluetooth device as shown in the Fig-WN3.

Some common features of Bluetooth are listed hereunder as:

    • It is wireless. When you travel, you don't have to worry about keeping track of a briefcase full of cables to attach all of your components, and you can design your office without wondering where all the wires will go.

    • It is inexpensive. As the technology is improving day by day and hence the cost of wireless equipment is beginning to disappear.

    • You don't have to think about it. No user interaction required. Bluetooth doesn't require you to do anything special to make it work. The devices find one another and strike up a conversation without any user input at all.

    • Bluetooth communicates on a frequency of 2.45 gigahertz, which has been set aside by international agreement for the use of industrial, scientific and medical devices.
