Harald Bluetooth was king of Denmark in the late 900s. He managed to unite Denmark and part of Norway into a single kingdom and then introduced Christianity into Denmark. He left a large monument, the Jelling rune stone, in memory of his parents. He was killed in 986 during a battle with his son, Svend Forkbeard. Choosing this name for the standard indicates how important companies from the Baltic region (nations including Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland) are to the communications industry, even if it says little about the way the technology works.

Bluetooth devices use a four stage process to find each other and create PANas per the table-I.

Device discovery: The device broadcasts its MAC address and a code identifying the type of device.
Name discovery: The device identifies itself by a friendly name.
Association: The device Joms the bluetooth network.
Service discovery: The device announces the services that it can provide.

There are several uses for Bluetooth wireless technology, which includes creating a wireless connection to the Internet with a mobile phone or a modem server, transferring files between computers or between a computer and another device. Some other applications of Bluetooth can be categtorised as:

    • Printing to a Bluetooth wireless printer.
    • Using a Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse.
    • Joining a personal area network (PAN).
    • Synchronizing a personal digital assistant (PDA) to a computer or another device using Bluetooth wireless technology.

Bluetooth devices have to support identical profiles to communicate. For security, Bluetooth offers proprietary I28-bit encryption and capability to set per-user passwords to guard against unauthorized access to the Bluetooth network. Bluetooth specifications are shown in table-2.

Maximum throughput: 1 Mbps (some devices boast 2 Mbps
Max Range: Typically 30 feet, but some high powered Bluetooth devices have maximum range of 300 feet.
Security: Data encryption, password protected access, PPTP, and secured emote access through web browsers.
    Compatibility: Bluetooth
Communication Mode: Master/ Slave - a single master device with up to seven active slave devices.
